Dr. David Green, director of NCSU’s Seafood Laboratory, spoke to the Dare County Board of Commissioners Monday on Handling Seafood Safely at Local Farmers’ Markets. Green said public health concerns for sale of seafood at local farmers’ markets are relatively few and solutions are not difficult, and offered the Lab’s help “if Dare County decides to move forward in support of working waterfronts and community-based fisheries.” Green’s presentation is attached.
Please contact the Dare BOC now to let them know you support modification of county ordinances to allow local commercial fishermen to sell seafood at farmers’ markets in the county. A sample message that you might send to DCBOC@darenc.com is posted here:
“I support modification of the 1999 Dare County Board of Health Rules Governing the Operation of Seafood Markets to allow Dare County commercial fishing families to sell seafood they have harvested directly to consumers at open-air, public farmers’ markets held on a regular basis and operated under market rules and policies approved by the market’s governing body.”
